The annual language contest gives you a chance to test your knowledge and demonstrate your determination. You can also compete for the first prize and show your willingness to achieve your goals. It was a great experience for those who decided to take part in this competition this year. Congratulations to Anna, Alina, Polina, Dasha, Maria, Vika, Daria, Adel, Nastya and Karina! We are proud of you!
Would you like to share your impressions with those who are still hesitating about whether it's worth participating in such events?
The Contest was definitely a real challenge for me and for my nervous system cause I was getting cold feet all the time (even during the preparation) without any idea how to calm down! Chocolate chip cookies were the only way to get over that feeling but they didn't work at times so, I suppose, that was the main problem.
ReplyDeleteThe tasks were just like "(͡๏̯͡๏)", especially Listening Task 2 where we had to fill the gaps. I guess I need to work on such type of listening as hard as I can, in order to cope with this difficulty as soon as possible. It may sound unbelievable, but I obviously enjoyed speaking, I mean, I didn't enjoy it at the contest but afterwards, when I came home, I realized how it's so cool to have a feeling of adrenaline in your blood. And, of course, I appreciate the priceless experience such practice brought to me and all the mistakes it pointed out, so now I know exactly what is okay with my speech and what is not, and also what the audience likes and dislikes.
Moreover, this contest gave me a beautiful chance to realize how it's so important to choose the right place in the class where you're going to do your Olympiad work. It's great when you know that it's necessary to sit not so far and not so close to the loudspeakers so that not to have any problems with listening, BUT it's even more important NOT to choose a place next to the window. Everyone, if you're ever going to take part in any contest, avoid the windows if it's winter. If you need more details, I can colorfully describe all the feelings I had while getting cold feet (in the literal meaning of this expression) and trembling like an aspen leaf. It influenced my general condition in a very very very bad way, so I just want you all to know how it's so unpleasant.
And, to sum up, I persistently advise everyone to experience such incredible things like participating in different contests, especially, English contests, since they're so unusual for their structure. No other subject gives you such a wide range of different things to do at one time. Definitely, such Olympiads take a lot of practice and you're not going to achieve any goal just by wishing you could win something. As Marva Collins has said, "Success doesn't come to you, you go to it". Schooltime provides you with loads and loads of different opportunities, so don't miss any chance and don't waste your time hesitating about whether it's worth participating in such events.
Thank you for such a detailed feedback, Dasha! I'm really impressed by your vivid descriptions!
ReplyDeleteDeep down, referring to the Olympiad as to just a contest means to say absolutely nothing for me. Such factors as emotional stress and anticipation, pride and responsibility, failure and success had intermingled so much by the time of the Olympiad that it was unfeasible to describe what I was experiencing during that period of time!!! Funny enough, all our girls and I made up a saying while waiting for the speaking tour: "If you have never participated in the English language contest, you've lost a great part of your life and can't judge those who are so nervous facing it"! It makes sense, doesn't it? Little wonder everyone can endorse wholeheartedly the perception that learning English for us and for me specifically is neither a school obligation nor a hobby. It's something beyond our understanding, it's an endless and stainless inspiration, enjoyment and happiness. Learning English is a revitalisation for me. My eyes are closed if I don't learn something new in English!
ReplyDeleteSo, I long to thank you, Elena Vladimirovna, for bestowing such an amazing possibility of learning and feeling English on us! None of us would have been the same but for you!!!
Your feedback is much appreciated, Karina!Thank you for letting me know that all my efforts aren't in vain. It makes me feel special:)
DeleteThank you for sharing your emotions with us, Nastya! I'm sure your story will inspire other students to follow your example.
